    Farr 727 Owners Association : Season 2007 - 2008.

The Presidents blurb on the nationals….

For the second year in a row it was great to see such a great turnout for the 727 Nationals. We equalled last years entry numbers of 13 boats, with 10 boats returning, and Bumble Bee, Entrée and Mumbo Jumbo joining this years battle.

Unfortunately, whilst the boats and their crews turned out in force, the breeze didn’t. However when racing did manage to get underway, the lack of breeze didn’t stop some great competition. Congratulations to Phil Robertson and his crew on the RAYC club boat Thermatech for mastering these very trying conditions to get all 4 guns of the weekend, and take away the trophy.

Building on this great turnout, we are hoping to continue and expand. Below is what is planned for the coming winter and summer months. Have a read and fire back your thoughts.

‘Hope to see you out there, and enjoy the racing…

Coming Season(s):

If there was any one positive out of the nationals it had to be having 13 boats on the start line.  It was also proved that any of the boats can be competitive with a little bit of time (and a good crew never hurts!) and perhaps some sails.  There were also a handful (5-6) Auckland based boats that race regularly that we were not able to get to the nationals.

Building on this we are keen to work on the coming winter and summer series and get as many boats to chosen races; series.  Feedback on programme and an indication of interest would be much appreciated:

Winter 2007:

-          RAYC Winter Series:  This is being supported by the Up to 26 Foot Club and the first harbour race saw a reported 44 boats start.  Those that raced, (unfortunately only 3 727s), all commented that it was some of the best racing they had done in a long time.  We have had feedback from some owners that they don’t want to race every fortnight but would be interested in racing once a month on the windward leewards.  Prize giving is at RAYC and is well supported and good fun.  Details and entry, including individual races www.rayc.org.nz

-          SSANZ Simrad Series:  For those that are not familiar with this series, they are 3 two handed races run over late winter, with each race getting longer.  Longest being 58 miles.  Last year was fantastic and remembered by most people because of some amazing downwind legs.  We had 4-5 727s race over different races.  If we have 5 or more boats enter the series we will be allocated our own division, otherwise we will be entered in with the Up to 26 Foot mixed fleet. Details dates etc available on www.ssanz.co.nz

Summer 2007 – 2008:

One of the key drivers behind the summer  series is taking into consideration that people have boats moored in different parts of the harbour and may already be doing their local club series.  As an association we don’t want to take people away from supporting their respective clubs, but rather encourage some class racing in addition to.  On a frequency which is not going to discourage series entries from racing overload! Proposed for the coming season:

Auckland Champs:

Straight after the nationals people were discussing what a pity it is to only get 13 boats together once a year and how unfortunately this year the time of the year made the wind a bit of a lottery.  This flowed on discussions of holding an Auckland Champs early in the season. Talks are already underway with this – at present it is looking at being in a similar format to the national champs – tentative date late September. Discussion on:

a.       One day event – 5 races (Sat or Sun)

b.      Two day event – 8 races

727 Cup:

Two years ago we started the 727 Cup - run over summer - incorporating the Gold Cup Series and the Up to 26 Windward Leeward Series.  We’re keen to dust this off and are proposing that the Cup, supported by the 727 Owners Association, again incorporates:

a.       Gold Cup Series:  This year looks like being either a 4 or 5 race series, with the 3 longer races being started on a Friday night. This will provide some interesting racing in terms of night time racing as well as freeing up the remainder of the weekend. See RAYC website www.rayc.org.nz

b.      Windward leewards: We are proposing to have windward leewards once a month. At this stage it is unclear what will happen with the Up to 26 Foot Club Summer Series, however these W/L’s will ultimately end up being run by either RAYC and/or the Up to 26 Foot Club.

727 Windward Leeward Trophy:

Awarded by 727 association to winner of  the summer W/L series as above.

Summer Cruising:

For something a little more leisurely, the association is intending to target a few club cruising dates over the summer. Dates and details to be advised. Feed back from members on requests, possibilities….
