All boats will be in the spirit of the class.
1. DRAWINGS
1. All yachts shall conform in all
respects to the drawings of Bruce Farr 727 Yacht Design except where these
rules specifically allow departure from the drawings.
2. All boats shall be from the Farr 727
or Horizon, i.e., hull, deck and rudder moldings. The only exception being
Pinto, (original mould plug).
3. The silhouette must be preserved as
drawn for both 727 and Horizon hulls.
4. The designer's layup sheets must be
observed during building. No exotics (eg, Kevlar, Nomex etc) are permitted on
boats first launched after September 1, 1988.
2.
INTERIOR ARRANGEMENT
The
interior arrangement to be as per designer's drawings including permanent bunks
for at least three people, lockers port and starboard, toilet (not a bucket),
sink, minimum fresh water capacity of six litres in closed containers and a
two-burner stove.
3.
WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS
All
yachts must be weighed and conform with the minimum weight of 2850lbs
(1291kgs). Those yachts which are underweight must add extra weight.
Up
to 200lbs (91kg) of the extra weight shall be placed:-
1. Above the waterline.
2. 50% against the main forward bulkhead
and touching the hull on either side (ie, split in two with half on each side).
3. The remaining 50% must be fixed aft of
the bridge deck and against the hull on either side.
The
balance, if any, of the extra weight shall be fastened so that not less than
50% of the balance is forward of the forward bulkhead (ie, forward of the aft
end of the anchor locker as shown in the original design) and the remainder of
the balance is aft of the aft bulkhead (ie, aft of the aft end of the cockpit).
The
only exception to this rule shall be the existing boats - Blueberry,
Bullwinkle, Go, Mumbo jumbo and Zap, who shall prior to observing the above
rules be allowed to make structural alterations to their hulls prior to
re-weighing their boats to ascertain the weight to be added as above. Any
structural alterations shall be subject to the approval of the majority of the
measurers, at the final discretion of the committee.
These
alterations may include the addition of a marine toilet and/or bunks and
furniture in keeping with the designer's original drawings. The weight of the
toilet and bunks is subject to the measurers approval.
Any
boat carrying existing ballast weight shall ensure such ballast conforms to
this rule, otherwise such ballast must be removed and placed according to this
rule.
1. All weights must be verified, numbered
and have the class stamp or mark upon them so a consequent random check can be
made.
2. All yachts shall be weighed stripped
of all removable gear excluding motor. No water or petrol shall be carried.
Main boom, mast, spinnaker pole and stove only remain on board.
4.
ENGINE
All
boats to carry an auxilliary motor of 5HP minimum.
5.
DECK HARDWARE
1. A maximum of four winches will be
allowed.
2. Mainsheet traveller - maximum length of
track (measured between stops) to be 1.2 metres. Track to be located aft of the
main companionway on the bridge deck.
3. Headsail sheeting - optional fore and
aft and/or transverse adjustment.
6.
SAILS
1. Sails will be restricted in number,
area and minimum cloth weight as follows:-

2. Mylar is permitted in addition to
standard Dacron cloths. Kevlar and other exotics are not permitted in sails
constructed after September 1, 1988.
3. Maximum dimensions for all sails are
to be as shown on the Farr 727 Standard Sail Plan, dated September 1, 1991,
measured with sails spread flat. Full length battens are permitted in any sail.
4. The mainsail must have a minimum of
two and a maximum of three rows of reef points, one of which must reduce the
total area to less than 50%, as shown in the drawings.
5. All headsails may only be set hanked
to the forestay, or in a luff foil.
6. All sails must carry the association
stamp beside the sailmaker's mark.
7. Sail purchases are resticted to one of
each type in any given twelve month period subject to the discretion of the
committee.
SAIL
CONTROLS
Sail controls, exluding sheets, halyards, leech and foot cords and reef lines
are restructed to the following:-
1. Mainsail
Boom vang, luff and leech cunningham, foot outhaul and mainsheet traveller
adjustment, and topping lift.
2. Headsail
No 1 Genoa - one luff cunningham.
No 2 Genoa - one luff cunningham, one row of reef points will be optional.
No 3 Genoa - one luff cunningham, one row of reef points will be optional.
Barber haulers are permitted for all headsail sheeting.
3. Spinnaker
Barber haulers are permitted on both sheet and guy.
No hydraulic controls will be allowed.
Class sail insignia is available from the Association and will be compulsory.
Insignia is to be displayed as per design standard sail plan.
7.
SPARS
Spars
shall be maufactured from aluminium alloy only and shall conform to the
following restrictions:-
1. Size
Size of section shall be a minimum diameter of 89mm in the fore and aft plane
including sail track to within 1981mm of the top of the spar.
The minimum tranverse dimension shall be 63mm to within 1981mm of the top of
the spar.
2. Taper
The top of the spar to be not less than 32mm fore and aft and traverse
including sail track. Tapering to be such that there is no hollow in the fore
and aft or transvers profiles between the top (taking minimum size at to and
minimum size of section at lower end of taper as given in subsection 1. above).
3. Weight
Weight of the mast section to be not less than 2.2kg/m.
4. Centre of Gravity Height
Centre of gravity height to be measured with mast fully rigged (excluding mast
mouted winches) with both ends of halyards attached to gooseneck fitting.
Centre of gravity to be a minimum of 'Y' to be established from fully rigged
mast.
5. Spreaders
These shall be restricted to one pair positioned as shown on the sail plan and
of minimum lengths as given by dimensions on the sail plan.
6. Black Bands
Black bands 25mm wide shall be painted on mast and boom at maximum limit of
sails. Measurement to be taken from inside face of track to start of band.
7. Spinnaker Poles
(One only). Measurement of spinnaker poles will be taken with spinnaker pole
attached to spinnaker ring on mast and against forestay. The length of pole
from forward face of mast to bearing surface for the brace at outer end of pole
shall not exceed 2.85m. Pending a decision on centre of gravity height of stock
masts, individual boats shall be checked and a class average established.
8. Jockey Poles shall be optional.
9. Spinnaker Pole Mast Attachment - maximum height above bottom black
band shall be 0.4 metres.
8.
STANDING RIGGING
Shall
be restricted to the following:-

No
shrouds or stays are to be adjustable while under sail except the backstay,
which may be adjustable by means of pulleys only.
Chainplates
to be positioned as per attachment points as shown on design drawings.
9.
RUNNING RIGGING
With
the exclusion of sheets, shall be restricted to a maximum of three halyards for
the fore triangle, one main halyard and two topping lifts, one each for the
main and spinnaker pole.
Main
topping lift may be utilised as spare main halyard.
10.
ELECTRONICS
Electronics
for class racing will be restricted to boat speed, log, echo sounder and radio.
No other electronic equipment is to be used for class racing.
11.
KEEL
The
keel is to be made of cast iron, minimum weight shall be 400kg. (To be made
from the standard Farr 727 plug), without modification apart from filler for
normal fairing. Keels must fit the Farr 727 keel template. Position of keel is
shown on the design plan.
12.
MEASURING
Two
measureres will be appointed. In the case of any protest, the committee shall
for the fee of $10, appoint two measurers to check the discrepancy. The
measurers shall report back to the committee for appropriate action, refunding
the fee if the protest is upheld.
Committee
members and measurers may board boats before and after racing to check weights,
safety equipment etc. Failure to comply with official certificate and/or safety
requirements will result in automatic disqualification.
13.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
1. All yachts to comply with NZYF Safety
Regulations Part VI Sheltered Waters (Harbour Category), except Where sailing
instructions specify otherwise.
2. Each yacht must carry a pulpit,
pushpit, stanchions and life lines.
14.
RACING RULES
All
yachts competing in Association races shall observe IYRU rules, together with NZYF
prescriptions, whichever may apply, together with any of the Association rules.
15.
REGISTRATION OF FARR 727 YACHTS
Registraton
of Farr 727 yachts deviating from the design drawings, but not from the spirit
of the class, will be solely at the descretion of the committee. Any such
deviations should be checked and approved by the committee.
16.
PRINCIPAL HELMSMAN
In
all races under class rules, the principal helmsman must be nominated. If the
principal helmsman changes from the one last handicapped, the boat's handicap
shall be increased by 2.5% for that race. Nominated helsman shall include
co-owners who may change without penalty.
17.
CERTIFICATE
Each yacht conforming to these rules will be issued with a Certificate of Registraton. This certificate will include details of make-up weights to be carried (number, weight and placement) and any other extraordinary details which may have affected its measurement, or which may have been approved by the committee in accordance with clause 15 above. This certificate must be carried on the boat at all times and be available for inspection by the measurers.
